Williams beats Sara Errani of Italy and will face Maria Sharapova in final.

MADRIDSPAIN (MAY 11, 2013) (WTA TOUR) -  Serena Williams swept past Sara Errani into the final of the Madrid Open on Saturday (May 11).

Chasing a 50th career title at the clay event in the Spanish capital, defending champion Williams was far too strong for the Italian seventh seed, winning 7-5 6-2 to set up a clash against Maria Sharapova who beat Ana Ivanovic for the place.

American Williams, 31, said she was pleased to have reached the final and would be working to improve her game.

"Definitely some improvements I would like to do but I am happy to be in the final," she said. "Work on my consistency and you know finally make a little less mistakes so we will see how it goes."

Sunday's opponent will be a different proposition to Errani, with Russian Sharapova among the players on the Tour who can come close to matching Williams for power.

World number two Sharapova will replace Williams at the top of the rankings if she goes on to win the final.
