NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORKUNITED STATES (OCTOBER 20, 2012) (REUTERS) - A sea of red flooded the inside of Manhattan's Terminal 5 stadium on Saturday (October 20), as die-hard Manchester United fans cheered and watched intently as the team maintained a close score against Stoke City.

The game took place at Old Trafford in England, but was broadcast LIVE in New York on the stadium's big screen at 10:00 a.m. EST (14:00 GMT).

The event aimed to build up the club's fanbase, which is a household name in soccer-loving parts of the world but has only a limited following in the United States.

"We never expected this to happen in New York," said Roberto Vizuete, a New Yorkresident from Ecuador.

"It's really, really awesome. I mean, all the Manchester United fans are here supporting the team and we're really appreciating all the atmosphere and the event that's happening right now and the game."

Marisa Fair said waking up for a Manchester game is just part of being a fan.

"I'm just kind of a soccer player at heart and I played for years," Fair told Reuters.

"And then a lot of my friends love them and it's just a lot of fun, so get up way too early and watch a bunch of games."

Sylveurs Owusu said the team's history is what makes them so special.

"They find a way to find victory all the time and that's what I love about this team," said Owusu.

"They play great soccer. They find a way to get a victory all the time."

The crowd embraced Manchester's 4-2 victory over Stoke City.
