Hong Kong plunges into darkness for Earth Hour.

HONG KONG, CHINA (MARCH 26, 2011) WWF - Hong Kong's iconic Victoria Harbour observed an hour of darkness on Saturday (March 26) to mark Earth Hour which is aimed at promoting the protection of the environment and renewable energy.

The territory's skyline packed with high-rise buildings and skyscrapers plunged into darkness for the annual event which began in 2007.

Japan's massive earthquake and subsequent tsunami which sparked a nuclear crisis in Fukushima has added poignancy in this year's event, raising doubts about nuclear power as a possible non-fossil fuel energy alternative.

According to Earth Hour organiser World Wildlife Fund (WWF), more than 4,000 cities in 131 countries are participating in this year's event.
