Kenyan Geoffry Mutai wins the 2011 Boston Marathon with a world record breaking time of 2 hours, 3 minutes, and 2 seconds

HOPKINTON, MASSACHUSETTS. (APRIL 18, 2011)  LAGARDERE UNLIMITED -
Kenya's Geoffrey Mutai set an official world record for the men's marathon at the Boston Marathon on Monday (April 18), slashing almost a minute off the previous mark.

Mutai completed the course in an unofficial time of two hours three minutes and one second, shattering the existing record of 2:03.59 set by Ethiopia's Haile Gebrselassie at Berlin in 2008.

Mutai held off countrymen Geoffrey Mosop in a sprint down Boston's Boylstron Street after favorably cool temperatures and a significant tailwind combined to set the stage for fast times.

Kenyan Caroline Kilel won the women's race in an unofficial time of 2:22.36
