Paqcquiao loses to U.S. boxer Timothy Bradley - his first loss since 2005
MANILA, PHILIPPINES (JUNE 10, 2012) (REUTERS) -Filipino boxing fans were shocked after watching eight division boxing champion Manny Pacquiao lose his WBO Welterweight title to U.S. boxer Timothy in Las Vegas on Saturday (June 9).
Boxing fans trooped to public parks, coliseums, cinemas and sports bars across the Philippines on Sunday morning (June 10) to watch the live screening of the Las Vegas bout.
Stunned silence replaced cheers from a crowd of around 3,000 people watching the live telecast at the Freedom Park in Marikina, an eastern Manila suburb, after hearing the split decision victory favouring the American boxer. Fans were in disbelief that their idol lost despite displaying superb punches against Bradley.
Volunteer librarian Gina Tugo cried and said the outcome might have been God's will.
"This must be God's way of telling him to continue serving the public," she said.
This was Pacquiao's first defeat since 2005 after facing Mexican boxer Erik Moralesfor the Super Featherweight title.
Pacquiao, a sitting member of the Congress, is regarded in the Philippines as a national idol, earning him the nickname Pambansang Kamao (Nation's Fist).
Pacquiao currently has seven world boxing titles, with a career record of 54 wins with 38 knockouts, four defeats and two draws.
